Despite 2009 recession, Plastic Surgery still very common…

American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery 2009 Statistics were recently published.  They showed that in 2009 there was a 2 percent decrease from 2008 in total number of cosmetic procedures.  Surgical procedures were down somewhat by 17 percent but noninvasive procedures such as Botox were actually up 1 percent.  The total number of procedures performed was 9,993,711 or almost 10 million procedures!

Interestingly, breast augmentation was the most common procedure performed with 311,957 augmentations accounted for.  Liposuction was a close second with 283,735 procedures counted.

In the nonsurgical arena, Botox and Dysport were the most common procedures with 2,557,068 injections performed and Fillers such as Juvederm, Restylane totaled 1,313,031.

Interestingly women had over 90% of all procedures with men receiving around 9% of them.  44% of the patients were between the ages of 35-50.

While the total numbers may be slightly down, in a time where the American economy is in trouble, it is amazing how popular and important plastic surgery procedures remain.

French PIP Implants

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010 at 12:02 am | Posted in Breast Augmentation

I received a few phonecalls today asking about the French recall of silicone implants from maker PIP.  PIP implants were sold in the United States until May 15th 2000.  The recall involved the French manufacturer using unauthorized silicone in their product.  See this link for more info.

The current silicone approved implants in the United States are from Mentor and Allergan, not PIP.  Thus, anyone receiving silicone implants since 2000 should not worry.  If a patient does indeed have older PIP silicone implants from pre-2000 she should see her surgeon to see if an MRI should be obtained to make sure that there are no leaks.

I’ll refer my readers to a page on my breast implant website that discusses the safety of United States FDA approved silicone breast implants.  My patients should rest easy knowing I have never used a PIP implant.  Other patients that may have had surgery elsewhere and may have had this implant prior to the year 2000 are more than welcome to call for an appointment to discuss screening options.

Best,

Evan Sorokin
