French PIP Implants

I received a few phonecalls today asking about the French recall of silicone implants from maker PIP.  PIP implants were sold in the United States until May 15th 2000.  The recall involved the French manufacturer using unauthorized silicone in their product.  See this link for more info.

The current silicone approved implants in the United States are from Mentor and Allergan, not PIP.  Thus, anyone receiving silicone implants since 2000 should not worry.  If a patient does indeed have older PIP silicone implants from pre-2000 she should see her surgeon to see if an MRI should be obtained to make sure that there are no leaks.

I’ll refer my readers to a page on my breast implant website that discusses the safety of United States FDA approved silicone breast implants.  My patients should rest easy knowing I have never used a PIP implant.  Other patients that may have had surgery elsewhere and may have had this implant prior to the year 2000 are more than welcome to call for an appointment to discuss screening options.
