I often get asked about hair removal by my patients in South Jersey. This quick entry will discuss hair removal in my practice. Hair removal is a very common request by my patients and I have an excellent laser, the Candela GentleMax laser which is appropriate and effective for many different skin types and colors. Many practices offer “laser” hair removal and do not even use a true laser. Other light based technologies (for instance IPL) do not have the same result as this machine. Recently “home laser hair removal” machines have appeared on the market, and once again, buyer beware of these machines.
Hair removal can be achieved by many different means. Plucking. Tweezing. Waxing. Depilatory Creams. Electrolysis. Threading. Sugarding. And Laser Hair Removal. These are the more common ways that hair is removed. Most plastic surgeons use lasers to remove hair in recent years. The treatment is quick. Very little discomfort is involved. You can go right back to work after a short in-office procedure. There may be a little redness in the areas treated and they may feel slightly sore or even like a mild sunburn.
Several treatments are needed in order to capture hairs actively growing at the time of treatment. Thus, 5 or 6 treatments are usually spaced every 3 to 4 weeks to obtain a near hairless result. Touchup and maintenance procedures may be needed at a future date.
In New Jersey, state law states that laser hair removal is supposed to be performed by a physician and not a technician or “other” trained individual. While in Philadelphia and in many other locations this is not the case, I follow these legal regulations and perform hair removal at Delaware Valley Plastic Surgery by myself. I will meet with you first, discuss options, and perform the procedure.
